Happy Saturday!! I hope everyone had a great week! 💕🙏🏾
This week was pretty good for me! Not much happened, it was a nice chill week! A few things I’m working on improving in my dancing are my extensions ( the height of my leg when its in front, side, and behind me.) and not sickling my foot when I point it. I’m sure some of you are wondering why I want to work on my extensions. I want to work on them because they’re ok but in my opinion they could be higher and they’re are some technical things I can work on. Especially my extension in à la seconde ( when my leg is lifted to the side of me.)
I want to work on my standing leg ( leg connected to the ground) staying turned out and being more stable, and then my working leg ( leg in the air) being stabler and higher. Lastly I want to work on my upper body not leaning to the side when my leg is in the air. Sometimes instead of a having a straight upper body my upper body is leaning which is not good. So I’ve been doing a lot of strengthening and stretching to help my à la seconde. It’s slowly getting better which makes me happy! I just have to have patience and stay consistent. 😜💜
OK so now moving on to my sickling foot. It’s interesting because only my left foot does this. 😫 If you look at your foot its probably in a straight line. Now if you turn your toes inward that’s what sickling your foot is. So I do that when I point my foot and then when I’m also on pointe which is NOT good. When I or anyone sickles they’re foot it breaks the line of the foot. There’s a significant risk for injury from sickling the foot. I’m not sure when exactly I started sickling my foot its just been a big thing my teachers and I have noticed recently. 🤦🏾♀️ To fix it I need to do a lot of ankle strengthening exercises and I also need to actively work to not sickle when I’m dancing. These are all things I’ve been doing to help fix it! I’m happy to say that starting to see improvement which makes me very happy!! 😊
Something I’ve realized I have not talked to you all about is how I recover from my long days of dance! So I wanted to share with you some of the things I do to keep myself going!
One thing I like to do is to roll out!! Rolling out is when you get a foam roller and you lay on it and roll back and forth releasing tension from your muscles. Or sometimes I love using my massage gun!! When I’m really sore I like to massage biofreeze into my muscles which feels SO good! One of my favorite things to do for recovery is my hyperice leg compression system! They Are these really big “boots” that you put on your legs. Once they’re on your legs you tap this button to turn them on and then the “boots” start to to inflate!! It’s so cool and it feels amazing!!! The leg compression system is designed to help with blood circulation and reduces inflammation. Huge shout out to my parents! They surprised me and got me this a couple months ago for birthday!! Thank you again mom and dad for getting me this system I LOVE it so much!!! 😘😘😘 OK so the last thing I do for recovery is, every night before bed I try make time for some mindfulness. I light a few candles in my room and put calming music on! I do a nice stretch and while I’m stretching I like to reflect on my day. I like to think on things I did well and things I could work on. 😌💞🙏🏾
Come see me perform in NYC in May!!
My end of year spring performance at Joffrey is May 11th! There are two shows. There’s one at 2pm and one at 7pm!! I hope to see you there!!
